In 2015, a group of six hungries learned from Founding Father Ian of the concept of the Luther Burger — two glazed donuts interspersed within a cheeseburger. They gathered 'round to partake (using a Five Guys double cheeseburger as the base) and as tasty as it was…it sat pretty heavy in the stomach. That experiment was a one-and-done, but out of the greasy ashes came a mandate: 1) to concoct a recipe that would not require such intestinal fortitude, and 2) to extend an invite to the masses. They decided that fried chicken would be less of a day-ruiner, and behold, it was. The IDT Sandwich was born. A Chick-fil-A sandwich with Krispy Kreme glazed donuts and the first Unofficial Event.

The IDT Sandwich Standard Operating Procedure says to remove the buns of a Chick-fil-A sandwich, insert two Krispy Kreme glazed doughnuts where the buns were a moment ago, and then return the prodigal buns to the sandwich to leave yourself with a meal of bun, doughnut, chicken, doughnut, bun. That is the traditional recipe.
HOWEVER, variety abounds. Your chicken can be plain or spicy. From Chick-fil-A, Popeye’s, or elsewhere. You can double stack it with two chicken sandwiches (bun, doughnut, chicken, doughnut, chicken, doughnut, bun). You can go bun-less and hold the doughnuts for a glazy finger experience. We’ve even had someone add fish sticks (see Summer 2023 Archive). The sandwich is only a canvas for the artist in you to paint.
Any event that is not officially sanctioned or funded by Big Event. Unofficial Events are planned by a shadowy cult of company culture curators who strive to disrupt Big Event with frequent fun and camaraderie. (I'm joking. Big Event does great work. We're just providing supplemental fun.)
It is true that the IDT Sandwich is no longer an Unofficial Event. It is a fully sanctioned and funded lunch gathering. But while we've passed the baton for The Sandwich, that first Unofficial Event laid the groundwork for…the other things we do.
